just another day
On Monday, I asked Dollie, "Whoa, are the VMAs this weekend?"
They are. September 9. Sunday. It's a date that would be chiseled into my brain, leaving permanent damage, a day that would be my only focus had I not done something crazy on May 9. (That'd be announcing my resignation, for those of you who missed the memo.)
For real, MTV, I watch "The Hills," "The Real World," "Newport Harbor" and the odd "Engaged & Underage" — if I worked there until July, continue to watch the channel AND STILL don't know when the VMAs are, the promos are lacking.
But anyway, I'm free on Sunday night!
2000. 2001. 2002. 2003. 2004. 2005. 2006 — I know where I was (1515, 770, home in front of the computer) and what I was doing (working hard, crying, laughing, yelling).
For the first time in a very long time, I will enjoy the show (I think. I'm not even sure who's performing or who's up for prizes) as a spectator. And I'm having a party.

Jon Secada! Get ready for a "100 Greatest" post. Best song ever!
Woah. I was thinking Oingo Boingo?
See, clearly I have kept my Secada love secret too long.
If memory serves, Chris has rocked this at Staraoke.
Oh and P.S. the first VMAs off the job is seriously the BEST VMAs EVER.
Your husband is a Staroke genius. I saw on his MySpace that he did "Sail On" and I couldn't even read on because I got so envious.
It's funny, I was going to guess that you were citing the Wings tune of the same title, but alas -- nay. I must confess, however, to actually really diggin' that Secada track. It seems to play in my basement laundry room in never-ending rotations (that and "Believe" by Cher). When he hits that chorus? Oomph. Get the fuck outta the way, because he's going to blow up the goddamn world if he has to spend another day without you. Well, that's how I hear it, at least.
And I'm only going to watch the VMAs on the slight chance we get to see one of our former colleagues having an on-screen cerebral hemorrhage and then attack a slot machine with his/her head.
Thanks for your invite, Jane, but I think Peg and I are going to sit this one out.
Cheeeeerz.
Yes, it is Mr. Secada's commitment that really puts that track over the top for me. We're talking the top half of the top 50 (were there actual rankings). I really need to post it. ...
And also buy it, apparently. It isn't even on my iTunes! Oh, the songs I lost when I switched to Mac. Good thing I can hear it clearly in my head AT ALL TIMES!
AND! The "Why do I have to tell you?" part always sounds to me like "Why do I have to kill you?" adding even more drama. Oh, I love it.
