get it, girl -- you know what you love

Here's the part I don't get. Or maybe it's the part they don't get? Am I being too hopeful with that one? Likely.

When John Kerry mentions Dick Cheney's gay daughter and people everywhere gasp like it's a cold diss (this is what the reporters told me last night), what exactly is the diss? See, I thought he was just saying, "We all know gays. Many of us have gays in our family. Do you really think they are choosing such a difficult path? And how to you explain to them that an amendment that takes away rights is fair?" But it seems like everyone else heard, "Eew, your running mate's daughter is a lesbian." and responded, "Oh snap!"

So, again, either everyone in political commentary is so stupid they didn't realize they were in essence saying Kerry shouldn't have brought up a personally "shameful" issue (really, that is what they were reacting to), or they don't mind being on record as saying that. Either way, not one person (not even Ron Reagan, who I can usually count on for some good old liberal, "Hey now!") said, "Um, guys? I think you're sending the wrong message here. If you're saying that Kerry's mention of someone being gay is an inappropriate below-the-belt hit, you're saying homosexuality is something to be ashamed of." They can't all think that. Can they?

This title brought to you by:
"Mr. Show," season one, "Good News" sketch. It's what Dave says during a lapse into homosinuality.

I thought I was the only one trying to figure out why Lynne Cheney was so angry with Kerry for mentioning her. It's not like he "outed" her. Leave it to Republicans to turn a pro-tolerance comment into a personal attack.

Oh no, I must be one of them, because it made me crazy too! To me, Edwards was saying, "Good for them for accepting their gay daughter! Good for me for pointing out and approving of their ability to do that!" and Kerry was saying, "I think if their gay daughter could speak about being gay, then she would tell you this about being gay, because she is lesbian which means she is gay, so I, a straight male, am going to tell you what I think she, a lesbian gay person, would say." Which made me horribly embarrassed for them both. P.S., I am so happy to see Ron Reagan on TV with such exciting frequency.

I was definitely horribly embarrassed for them both. Edwards, mostly because I thought he was tanking the debate in a major way (lucky for him Cheney just lied the whole time), and Kerry, because when he said the gay stuff, he looked like he was reading it off a card. What creeped me out was all the commentators, who really were reacting to them both (but mostly Kerry) bringing up a sore subject, taking a low blow, or kicking Cheney when he's down -- i.e. down on his knees begging God to forgive him for having a gay daughter. Ugh. It all just made me feel ill. And I think the only way to fix it is to make Charles Nelson Reilly the president. It's the only way I'd be happy. Or maybe Andrew Scott. He's not gay, but he has a lot of good ideas.
